Manchester Withington MP Jeff Smith is supporting National Postal Workers Day to thank all the staff who collect, sort and deliver letters, parcels and packets to 29 million addresses, 6 days a week.
The annual celebration of postal workers is organized by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and is particularly pertinent in the context of the coronavirus crisis this year. Over the last few weeks, Royal Mail’s postal workers have been working flat out across the country to ensure people, communities and businesses stay connected during the coronavirus pandemic.
The CWU are using the day to highlight some of the issues facing postal workers at this time, and to call for:
- Greater provision of Personal Protective Equipment for postal workers across the country
- Proper reward and recognition for postal workers during this period
- An end to the delivery of advertising mail
“I pay tribute to all postal workers who serve our communities throughout the country. They are going above and beyond to keep our country moving during this crisis and are far too often underappreciated for the crucial work they do.
I am supporting the CWU’s calls for greater support at work and public appreciation for postal workers.”
